Investigative Journalism & Publications

Served as an active research collaborator for three IPYS Venezuela studies on censorship and self-censorship, collecting data and documenting journalists’ experiences and working conditions across Venezuela. Contributed field information and professional perspectives to research examining press freedom, access to information, censorship, self-censorship, and the challenges facing journalists and media organizations. 


Participated in a collaborative investigative journalism project examining media ownership and freedom of expression in 
Venezuela. The project “Propietarios de la censura” was selected as a finalist for the 2015 Premio Gabo in the Innovation 
category. The other two studies are “Periodismo en arenas movedizas” (2016) and “La orden es el silencio” (2014).   

Periodismo en arenas movedizas (2016)

​The Press and Society Institute of Venezuela (IPYS Venezuela) is dedicated to promoting the principles of autonomy, plurality, and freedom of information in the journalism sector. To this end, it conducted a comprehensive analysis of journalistic practices, covering 67% of the national territory. This study involved the collaboration of journalists and activists from DHHH, who played a crucial role in facilitating the research. Additionally, it motivated the participation of 227 professionals from various media sectors, including private, independent, community, and state outlets.

The 2014 study titled "Censorship and Self-Censorship in Journalists and Media in Venezuela" highlights that direct orders from state authorities are common in Venezuela. However, these are not the only forces attempting to silence journalists. Pressure is also applied by the media industry, as well as by private economic entities, political groups, and organized crime, among others.
